Malware Hits Bank and steal 81$ Million from the Bangladesh Bank. This news was in headlines before 2 months ago. The bank of Bangladesh was using SWIFT financial system to transfer funds. SWIFT system is in use in thousands of bank in the world. Now another banks which is using SWIFT system is attacked by the hackers.
On 13 May 2016 Brussels based global-messaging network issued an alert.That SWIFT security team has found a new malware in customer’s environment.
Malware Hits Bank Again?
The details that which bank is attacked and how much money is stolen is not disclosed yet. SWIFT security team have shared that malware targets the PDF reader application. PDF reader is used in most of banks to read the check statments message and other reports.
Attackers are attacking those bank, which receive PDF reports of payment confirmation. A Trojan is installed in a PDF report when some one open that PDF report,some instructions will execute and removes the all fraudulent activities.
Attackers gained the knowledge about the targeted banks that they use PDF readers to verify the SWIFT messages
and also they have some source inside the bank. According to security researchers attackers gained an deep knowledge of bank’s network environment. They have full knowledge about the specific operational controls inside the targeted banks.
Federal Bureau of Investigation have said to Wall Street Journal that they suspect that there is some insider involved in 81 $ Million Bangladesh Bank Heist. FBI suspected that there is at least one employ of the bank is involved in that heist. This is also suspected that in this Bank Attack any insider is also involved.
Malware Hits Bank Again Swift Said About Security:
Attackers are compromising the Bank’s environment, stealing valid credentials and then using them to create, approve and submit SWIFT messages from their local networks to SWIFT Network. Attackers sending fraudulent messages with the stolen accounts, and than removing all the evidences of fraudulent messages. Attackers are targeting the PDF reader application that is mostly used in banks to view PDF reports.
SWIFT security team have said that , As a SWIFT users you are responsible for the security of your own computer through which you are communicating to SWIFT Network.
